The issue I have chosen was air pollution. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. The different types of air pollution consists of particle pollution, other common air pollution, and greenhouse gases. Particle pollution is the most hazardous for humans, and can be found anywhere in our environment. Particle pollution consists of ash, metals, soot, diesel exhaust, and chemicals. Other common air pollution consists of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and lead. Lastly, greenhouse gases are caused mostly by the burning of fossil fuels. The rest are created by natural sources and are necessary to keep a temperature right for other life forms to survive. Greenhouse gases are also the leading factor in global warming and climate change.

Air pollution generally looks like gases being exhaled out of things such as factories, planes, cars, and more. There are also types of air pollution that we can not see. You see air pollution everywhere. Believe it or not wherever you see cars, planes, and factories the smoke you see coming from them is air pollution. The effects air pollution has on humans is immense. Humans need clean air to breathe to stay alive and healthy. If these conditions are not met, you can get long-term health effects such as chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and even damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys. Places with a ton of factories such as China have such bad air that the wealthy are actually buying bottled air for consumption.

With my chime I want to raise awareness on how serious the situation of air pollution is. I don’t expect to change anything because humans are already so accustomed to driving cars, using factories, etc. in their daily life but maybe we can reduce some of it by creating awareness. The audience for my chime is the human race. First and foremost I want people to understand my chime, and not be puzzled as to what it is. I want it to look like air pollution so they can identify what it is for. Then I want their reaction to be realizing that air pollution seems so normal now that they don’t even realize they are doing it. I will hopefully achieve this reaction by making my chime identifiable and for people to figure out what it means on their own.

The impact that I hope to make on the issue of air pollution with my chime is how air pollution became a culture in our everyday life. This is a major issue because sooner or later we are going to run out of clean air, and that is already happening in some places. Without clean air we cannot live healthy lives, or maybe live at all. The fact that we are not doing anything or close to little to change our living habits is scary.

The materials I have chosen are copper pipes, soda bottles, and cotton balls. I chose these objects because I believe I can make a story out of the objects that someone just walking by can easily identify. The cotton balls represent clouds, the cans are mostly there for the noise but will have cars drawn on them pop-art style, and the copper pipes are also there for more sound.
